Indonesia is probably the most diverse nation in the world, home to 300 ethnic groups, and more than 700 languages! We will visit Indonesia's main three islands to grasp the diversity and learn about very different cultures. On Java we visit world-famous complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan, and climb two active volcanoes. On Bali we enjoy white sand beaches and waterfalls. On Sulawesi we visit Toraja region, known for its ancient traditios and very unusual funeral ceremonies.

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Jakarta, flight to Yogyakarta - Indonesia’s cultural capital on Jawa island. Checking into an art hotel.
  • Day 2
    We visit Kraton Palace, residence of Yogyakarta sultans, then visit Prambanan, a complex of early medieval Hindu temples. We have dinner on one of the beaches out of the city, enjoying sunset.
  • Day 3
    In the morning we visit Borobudur, a 9th-century Buddhist stupa and temple complex. Then we walk along authentic Muslim quarters of Yogyakarta and have dinner at an atmospheric local restaurant.
  • Day 4
    Bus or train transfer (about 8-10 hours) to the eastern city of Probolinggo, at the foot of the Bromo volcano. Checking into a hotel close to the crater.
  • Day 5
    Early in the morning we set out for Bromo crater and watch breathtaking sunrise in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. We explore active volcano and out of this world landscapes, then go back to the hotel and ride to Bondowoso (about 5 hours). There we check into a hotel close to Ijen volcano, and take a short walk to a gorgeous waterfall.
  • Day 6
    We climb the Ijen volcano, and explore crater of the “poisonous lake”, where hundreds of Indonesian workers mine sulfur every night. After lunch we take a bus and ferry to Bali (5 to 6 hours on the way) and check into a hotel in Ubud.
  • Day 7-9
    We spend three days exploring Bali by minivans, enoying island’s magical nature and famous landmarks. We start by visiting 10th century Tirta Empul and 16th century Tanah Lot temples. Then we hike to a waterfall in and walk in the jungle. We visit coffee plantations, rice terraces and local manufactures. We will also raft along a gorgeous river in the heart of the island. Finally, we travel to authentic Bali villages, stopping at lesser-known beaches, and watch traditional dances.
  • Day 10
    Flight to Makassar, the largest city on Sulawesi. We explore the city, visiting old port, strolling along the embankment and Chinatown experiencing realities of non-touristy Indonesian city. Night bus to Rantepao (9 hours).
  • Day 11-12
    Arrival in Rantepao, the major town of the mountainous Tana Toraja area. After checking into a hotel in the center we begin exploring the region by hired vehicles. We will attend world famous traditional burial ceremonies, visit authentic villages with unusual architecture, and watch ancient burial caves and graves in rocks and trees.
  • Day 13
    Morning arrival in Makassar airport, flight to Jakarta and then back home.

Is this trip for you? 

This trip is of below average difficulty. We will walk in cities and do easy 1-2 hours climbes ot two volcanoes. We will be moving around in hired vehicles for up to 9 hours, visiting places of interest on the way, as well as take two night buses. Our itinerary also includes three domestic flights. We will stay in guesthouses and hotels, all will have hot water, air conditioning or fans and wi fi internet. 

Price of the trip includes: 

  • Three domestic flights; 
  • Accommodation in double and triple rooms in hotels and guesthouses during the entire trip; 
  • All transportation, including buses, hired vehicles, a ferry and airport transfers; 
  • Rafting on Bali; 
  • Professional guiding services. 

To be paid separately:

  • Flight to Jakarta and back home; 
  • Medical insurance (mandatory); 
  • Entry tickets to temples, parks and other places of interest ($100-120); 
  • Food ($8-15 per person per day).
