During 12 days we will travel for 2,000 km in the heart of ancient Central Asian civilisations, exploring history of the region, from clash with Alexander the Great to the USSR. We will visit capitals of three kingdoms - The Khanate of Kokand, The Emirate of Bukhara and The Khanate of Khiva, the capital of ancient Sogdiana, explore forts and the desert. Bustling bazaars, Sufi medrese, 500-years old mosques, mausoleum of legendary conqueror Tamerlane, mosaics, mayolicas, ancient ornaments, embroidery and, of course, plov - truly an Uzbek work of art.

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Tashkent. Checking into a famous hostel where travelled from many countries stay.
  • Day 2
    We explore Tashkent, visiting the main square, Kukeldash madrassah, then have lunch in the famous Chorsu bazaar. In the evening we take a night train to Urgench (17 hours on the way)
  • Day 3-4
    Arrival in Urgench, a short trolleybus trip to Khiva, checking into a hotel near the gate to the old city. We will explore the walled inner town Itchan kala, visit famous minarets Kalta-Minor, Islom-Khodzha, ancient mosques and a museum. Next day we take a trip to the desert where we explore ruins of ancient Ayaz-kala i Toprak-kala forst. We might spend a night in yurts or come back to Khiva hotel.
  • Day 5-7
    We go to Bukhara by a car (8 hours through Kyzylkum desert), checking into a hotel in the old district. During our stay in Bukhara we visit massive 5th century Ark fortress, Lyabi Hauz and Po-i-Kalyan complexes, mausoleums, medrese, and the palace of emir of Bukhara. We will also enjoy local music, cuisine and see some unique souvenirs.
  • Day 8-10
    Car trip to Nurata (4 hours), checking into a hotel. We will visit some 16th century sites and might also go to see ancient petroglyphs. In the morning we go by car to Samarkand (3 hours) where we check into a hotel near the famous Registan square. We explore city center on foot, visiting Registan, stunning 15th century Bibi-Khanym mosque and grand mausoleum of 15th century conqueror Tamerlane. We will also visit the impressive Shah-i-Zinda necropolis where many Muslim saints are buried. We will also see the remains of Afrosiab city, a former capital of Sogdia kingdom that resisted Alexander the Great.
  • Day 11
    You bid farewell to the guide and take a train to Tashkent (4 hours). Flight back home.

Is this trip for you? 

This trip is of below average difficulty. It involves one 17-hours long night train ride (with sleeping benches, sheets and air conditioning), one 8-hour long car ride through the desert and several short car rides (3-5). We will also walk in cities and towns. The weather might be very hot - with up to 40 degrees Celsius. Accommodation in mid range hotels, 6-10 people rooms of good hostels (2 nights), all with hot water and wi fi internet. One night might be spent in a yurt.

Cost of the trip includes: 

- Accommodation in double/twin rooms of mid range hotels, 6-10 people rooms of hostels (2 nights) and, possibly, yurts (1 night);

- All transportation including trains, buses, cars, taxis and public transportation of all kinds;

- Breakfasts in some hotels;

- Professional guiding services.

To be paid separately: 

- Flight to Tashkent and from Tashkent back home;

- Tickets to palaces, museums and other places of interest ($50);

- Food ($10-12 per person per day);

- Medical insurance (mandatory)
