A dynamic journey through two neighboring countries will take us to the modern capital and the ancient colonial cities of Malaysia and to the most stunning places of Indonesia. Sacred caves and a unique bird park, New Year's Eve in the paradise of the Togean Islands, exotic traditions of the Tana Toraja region, walks through the famous temple complexes of Borobodur and Prambanan, and even the ascent of two volcanoes. It will be unforgettable!

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, checking into a hotel.
  • Day 2
    We visit holy Hindu Batu caves, then head to the world’s largest free flight bird park and explore Petronas twin towers with a lush park. For dinner we head to the famous Alor Street known for Chinese seafood and other mouthwatering Asian dishes.
  • Day 3
    Bus to Malacca (3 hours on the way), the oldest town in Malaysia. We visit the History and Ethnography Museum, ride a boat down the Malacca river, explore the old town and remains of the fort. After lunch we go back to Kuala Lumpur by bus (2 hours) and then fly to Penang island (1 hour) where we check into a hotel in the historic district.
  • Day 4
    We spend our morning in the jungle hiking to the sandy beach of Teluk Bahang National Park, then visit several remarkable Buddhist temples. Penang is one of the world’s food destinations, and we will take full advantage of it`s Malay, Indian, Chinese and Baba-Nyonya cuisines.
  • Day 5
    In the morning we visit Kek Lok Si - the largest Buddhist monastery in Southeast Asia. Then walk in Penang Botanic Gardens. We spend the rest of the day enyoing endless mazy streets of old Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Day 6
    Flight to Makassar, the largest city on Sulawesi (3 short flights). Checking into a hotel in transit zone of the airport.
  • Day 7
    Flight to Poso, a bus to Ampana (3 hours) - a port city for departure to Togean islands. After checking into a hotel we walk in the city.
  • Day 8
    Speed boat to the main port of Togeans (1.5 hours), a boat to our bungalows on the beach. We celebrate New year on the beach.
  • Day 9-13
    Waters of Togean islands are home to 96% of all existing coral species. Those interested can take a diving course or go snorkeling. We will also explore the nearby Una-Una volcanic island, watch dolphins, enjoy pristine beaches, go fishing or hunting for coconut crabs. On our last day we take a speed boat to Ampana and then ride jeeps to the Tana Toraja region (15-17 hours on the way).
  • Day 14-15
    Arrival in Rantepao, the major town of the mountainous Tana Toraja area. After checking into a hotel in the center we begin exploring the region by hired vehicles. We will attend world famous traditional burial ceremonies, visit authentic villages with unusual architecture, and watch ancient burial caves and graves in rocks and trees. In the evening of our second day we board a night bus to Makassar (8 hours on the way)
  • Day 16
    Arrival in Makassar, walks in the city. Flight to the ancient city of Yogyakarta on Jawa island. Checking into a hotel.
  • Day 17
    We visit two major attractions of Central Jawa – Prambanan, a complex of early medieval Hindu temples, and Borobudur, a 9th-century Buddhist stupa and temple complex, both located close to Yogyakarta. Afterwards we explore authentic Muslim quarters of Yogyakarta and have dinner in the famous local restaurant.
  • Day 18
    We visit Kraton Palace, residence of Yogyakarta sultans, and explore Yogyakarta’s landmarks. Dinner on one of the beaches outside the city.
  • Day 19
    Bus (9 hours) to the eastern city of Probolinggo and then to the village at the foot of the Bromo volcano (1.5 hours). Checking into a hotel close to the crater.
  • Day 20
    Early in the morning we set out for Bromo crater and watch breathtaking sunrise in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. We explore active volcano and out of this world landscapes, then go back to the hotel and ride to Bondowoso (6 hours). After checking into a hotel close to Ijen volcano we take a short walk to a gorgeous waterfall.
  • Day 21
    We climb Ijen volcano, and explore crater of the “poisonous lake”, where hundreds of Indonesian workers mine sulfur every night. After breakfast we take a bus and a ferry to Bali (2-3 hours), enjoy volcanic beach and take a bus to Ubud (3.5 hours) where we check into a hotel.
  • Day 22
    Flight to Kuala Lumpur and than back home.

Is this trip for you?

This trip is of easy physical grade. It includes walks in cities and towns and easy walks in the national park. We will take four domestic flights, ride buses and speed boats. Accommodation in tourist class hotels. Accommodation on Togean islands can be chosen in additional options.

Price of the trip includes:

  • All domestic flights:
  • Accommodation in double/twin (sometimes triple) rooms of tourist class hotels during the entire trip;
  • All transportation including buses, boats, ferries, hired and public transport;
  • All meals during five days on Togean islands+some breakfasts during the rest of the trip;
  • Professional guiding services.

To be paid separately:

  • Flight to Kuala Lumpur and back home;
  • Insurance (mandatory);
  • Entrance fees to temples, parks and other attractions (up to $100-200) and additional excursions on the islands ($40-100);
  • Diving (from $33 per dive or PADI Open Water diving course including 5 dives, test and certification – $390);
  • Snorkeling ($7-10 per day for snorkeling gear rent);
  • Food ($8-15 per person per day).
