Treasures of Borneo and Singapore
Virgine nature and the world's most advanced megapolis - this was this trip is all about. We will see all attractions of Singapore and then move to Borneo - world's third largest island. There we will explore giant caves of Mulu national park and meet unique wild animals in Bako national park. We will also enjoy beautiful beaches, and visit the largest water village in the world in Brunei. Expect warm sea, temples, and some of Asia's best food.
We arrive in Kuala Lumpur and change to a flight to Kuching. We check into a hotel near the river and go for a walk. Like almost any other Malaysian city, Kuching boasts a unique blend of different peoples and cultures. Malay, Indian, Chinese, British and other peoples have been living here at different times and have left their mark on the local cuisine and architecture.
First we walk on the river front and then get to the famous seafood food court, which is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. Countries of this region are well known for their street food, but just few places on the planet can boast a similar food variety! Here we will enjoy shrimps, cuttlefishes, octopuses, sea cucumbers – not to mention dozens of fish species.
In the morning we head to the Bako National Park. We leave Kuching on the bus, and then we have take a boat. Bako is like a miniature Borneo. It boasts small area all the landscapes existing on the island: beaches, rocks, grasslands, swamps and mangroves.
Bako is famous for its fauna. Crocodiles, crab-eating macaques, surilis, monitor lizards, plantain squirrels and more than 150 species of birds live here. Some animals can not be seen anywhere outside Borneo, like bearded pigs, who have long bristle on their snouts, and long-nosed monkeys, males of which have large red noses and pot bellies. The park also hosts a variety of carnivorous plants which consume insects.
We will explore the park, walking along hiking trails, and come back to Kuching for the night.
Day 3 - 5
We fly to the Gunung Mulu National Park and check into a simple guesthouse near a river. Gunung Mulu is a unique place on Borneo! It’s separated from the inhabited part of the island by mountains and jungles, so you can get there either by plane or by river at certain period of the year.
Gunung Mulu is famous for its enormous caves. We will visit the Deer Cave, known as the world’s largest cave passage. It is as high as a forty-story house! We walk along this gigantic corridor and enjoy absolute silence, which is broken only by sounds of waterfalls dropping down from the cave ceiling. We watch underground rivers flowing through one of the world’s longest underground systems – the Clearwater Cave.
We go hiking through the jungle, walk along canopies between trunks of giant trees and swim in the crystal clear water of forest rivers. Gunung Mulu is a home for more than 20 thousand animal species. In the daytime you may see hornbills, silvery gibbon, Javan pangolins. In the evening clouds of bats emerge from caves to hunt, and Bornean swifts and swallows fly into the grottoes to take their places – in the morning the reverse occurs.
After sunset nocturnal jungle inhabitants appear: spiders, centipedes and stick insects. The darkness is filled with amazing sounds: crickets of dozens of species chirp and frogs croak. We will take a night walk and go through jungle with torches.
On the last day we fly to the town of Miri on the Borneo coast and spend the night in a hotel.
In the morning we head by bus to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei (approximately 4 hours) and check into a hotel. We go by boat to Kampong Ayer – a village built over the Brunei River not far from the capital’s center. Local houses are constructed on wooden piles and connected with small wooden bridges. Boats ply along the village “streets” instead of cars. Just a hundred years ago most of the capital residents lived in these water houses. Now this village still remains the world’s largest water settlement, where more than ten thousand residents!
By boat we come to local mangroves, where we can see long-nosed monkeys and crocodiles. And then explore the Royal Regalia Museum, where the gifts to the Sultan of Brunei from foreign leaders, his jewelry and ceremonial artifacts are exhibited. The Sultan of Brunei is one of the world’s richest people, and the whole exposition looks extremely luxurious: crowns, weapons and models made of silver and gold and embedded with gemstones.
We also visit the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, which is considered to be the most beautiful in Southeast Asia.
Day 7 - 10
In the morning we head to the city of Kota Kinabalu by ferry, boat and jeep (7-8 hours on the way). We make a stop on Labuan island to do shopping in a duty-free of local offshore zone. In the evening we arrive in Kota Kinabalu and check into the hotel.
Next morning we take a boat to the tiny wild islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. It is an archipelago of five islands located a few kilometers from the coast. We will sunbathe on white sand beaches and swim in crystal clear sea water. We snorkel to watch more than 300 species of local fishes!
Next morning we take a bus to the foot of Mount Kinabalu – the island’s highest one. We walk along canopies at a height of 30 meters – it gives us a completely different view of the jungle! We visit Poring hot springs to enjoy sulfur baths and relax after our walk.
We spend the last day exploring Kota Kinabalu. We will visit the huge Filipino bazaar, known for it freshest seafood. In the evening we will enjoy a picturesque sunset on the seafront.
Day 11 - 12
In the morning we fly to Singapore. We check into a hotel and go for a walk in the city. How did this tiny country manage to achieve all this in so little time? The will seek an answer in the National Museum of Singapore and learn more about the history and the cultures of local people.
We explore the ultramodern Gardens by the Bay, a nature park which boasts huge super trees - tree-like concrete structures covered with thousands of plants. This is what happens when the beauty of nature and the latest technologies come together! We will also observe hundreds of thousands of plants from all over the world and enjoy the garden’s shady alleys.
We walk to the world famous Marina Bay Sands hotel, a symbol of Singapore which consists of three 55-storey towers connected by a huge roof terrace. We go upstairs to the viewing deck to enjoy the spectacular view of the city, and then enjoy the famous light shows!
Day 13 - 14
In the morning we head to the Singapore Zoo, considered to be one of the best in the world. It hosts wildlife from all parts of the world. We walk through the National Orchid Garden to watch a huge collection of these flowers. Here more than a thousand of orchid species grows in an area the size of two football fields.
Time to enjoy Chinatown! We will explore the modern Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the oldest local Hindu temple. This district also boasts some of the best food of the country. Many vendors are local stars and have been cooking their delicious food for generations! We will also try durian and other exotic fruits on the local market. Those interested can visit the famous Universal Studios amusement park and enjoy its attractions.
On the last morning we head to the airport and fly back home. Be sure to arrive well before your flight to discover the airport known as the best in the world!
