Tour itinerary

Day 1-3

Kathmandu, House of the living goddess - Kumari, Ancient cities of Patan and Bhaktapur

We arrive in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. We check into a guesthouse in the old city center, near the famous Freak street, and go for a walk. You immediately understand that this is the one of the oldest cities on the continent. Just a hundred years ago the valley of Kathmandu boasted three ancient kingdoms. Not surprisingly, every corner, every stone here breathes history. We will explore the Kathmandu Durbar Square, where the royal palace is located. We go in the house of the living goddess Kumari. This girl is worshiped here as a deity!

Walk to the Swayambhu stupa on the mountain - the symbol of the country. It was built during the times of the legendary Emperor Ashoka. Then walk to the Boudhanath stupa - a huge one, built in the 6th century. Its height reaches 36 meters! Pilgrims from all over the world come here to go around this building three times and pray. This place is surrounded by a very colorful area - monasteries, schools of yoga, shops of Tibetan doctors who sell their famous herbal remedies here.

We will spend the day visiting the nearby ancient cities of the valley - Patan and Bhaktapur. These are the capitals of ancient kingdoms, in which ancient temples and palaces are preserved. We will also take a stroll through the colorful fabric bazaar.

Day 4-8

Tashilunpo monastery in Shigatse, The sacred Yamdrok lake

In the morning we leave for Lhasa on a specially rented transport. In 4 days we will drive about 1000 kilometers to gradually acclimatize to altitudes of 4000-5200 meters above sea level. We will spend the nights in hotels of cities along the way. And of course on this road awesome views await us and stops in the main spiritual centers of Central Tibet!

We reach Shigatse and go to Tashilunpo monastery. This is the residence of the second most important person in Tibet after the Dalai Lama - Panchen Lama. Thousands of monks live in this huge monastery of the 15th century. Inside, in the stupas of gold and precious stones are the bodies of several previous lamas. But the main attraction is the biggest statue of Buddha-Maitreya in Tibet, 26 meters high. It took 280 kilograms of gold, the same amount of silver, 40 diamonds and 1000 pearls!

In the city of Gyantse at an altitude of 4100 meters above sea level, we will see the Kumbum stupa. This is one of the few multi-tiered stupas. Its halls and many niches hold hundreds of ancient Buddha statues. We reach Yamdrok Lake - one of the four sacred lakes in Tibet. Imagine the blue, like the sky, water, surrounded by mountain peaks covered with snow. On the banks, the first green grass is eaten by clumsy yaks - a mandatory attribute of any Tibetan landscape. Inhale theis intoxicating crystal clear air. This feels amazing!

In the evening of the last day, we arrive in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, and check into a hotel.

Day 9-10

Potala Palace, Ganden monastery

The main attraction of the capital of Tibet is of course Potala, the famous residence of the Dalai Lamas. According to legend, this grand palace on a rock was built around a cave in which the king of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo, was meditating. It is believed that it was he who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 7th century. We will go inside the palace, which amazes with incredible treasures. There are huge stupas holding the bodies of previous Dalai Lamas. According to the Buddhist tradition, these stupas are decorated with huge pieces of seven jewels - gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mountain coral, amber, agate, carnelian. We will see these treasures with our own eyes! Remember everything well - unfortunately, it is forbidden to take pictures inside the Potala Palace.

Heading to the 15th century Sera monastery, famous for its daily debates between monks on various aspects of Buddhist teachings. We will not be able to understand the meaning, but we will be completely immersed into the spirit of debates where teachers are doing their best to confuse the responding students.

On the last day we go to the Ganden Monastery, which is 80 kilometers from Lhasa. Here in the 14th century lived Tsongkhapa - the founder of the largest Gelug Buddhist school in Tibet. The current 14th Dalai Lama also belongs to this school. The stupa with the body of Tsongkhapa is situated in this monastery.
