To see real Indonesia, one has to go beyond tourist traps of Bali. We will start in the cultural capital of Yogyakarta and world famous Borobudur and Prambanan complexes. Later, we experience Martian landscapes of Bromo and Ijen volcanoes, explore Sulawesi island, and swim in breathtaking waterfalls. We will also marvel at unique underwater world of Togean islands, and at stunning nature and famous landmarks of magical Bali.

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Yogyakarta - Indonesia’s cultural capital on Jawa island. Checking into an art hotel.
  • Day 2
    We visit Prambanan, a complex of early medieval Hindu temples, and Borobudur, a 9th-century Buddhist stupa and temple complex, both close to Yogyakarta. Then we walk along authentic Muslim quarters of Yogyakarta and have dinner at an atmospheric local restaurant.
  • Day 3
    We visit Kraton Palace, residence of Yogyakarta sultans, and explore Yogyakarta’s landmarks. We have dinner on one of the beaches out of the city, enjoying sunset.
  • Day 4
    Short flight to Surabaya (1 hour) and minivan transfer to Cemoro Lawang, a village at the foot of the Bromo volcano (3.5 hours). Checking into a hotel close to the crater.
  • Day 5
    Early in the morning we set out for Bromo crater and watch breathtaking sunrise in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. We explore active volcano and out of this world landscapes, then go back to the hotel and ride to Bondowoso (about 2 hours). There we check into a hotel close to Ijen volcano, and take a short walk to a gorgeous waterfall.
  • Day 6
    We climb the Ijen volcano, and explorr crater of the “poisonous lake”, where hundreds of Indonesian workers mine sulfur every night. After breakfast we take a bus and ferry to Bali (2-3 hours on the way), enjoy a volcanic beach and then go to Ubud (3.5 hours on the way) to check into a hotel.
  • Day 7-9
    Morning walk to the sacred monkey forest in Ubud. Ten-kilometer rafting on the fairy-tale river Ayung. We will also visit the palace of the rulers of Ubud and explore the city, famous for its artists and craftsmen. A short trip to the waterfalls in the northwest of the island, a visit to the Water Temple on the lake, a trip to the coffee plantation and the largest rice terraces on the island. At sunset we will watch exotic dances in the temple at the edge of the 70-meter rock.
  • Day 10
    Flight with a transfer to the city of Luwuk in the south-east of the island of Sulawesi. From here we go to the port city of Ampana (5 hours) and check into the hotel on the beach.
  • Day 11
    Speed boat to Wakai, the main village of Togean islands (2 hours). From Wakai we take a speed boat to the nearby Kadidiri island (30 min) where we check into wooden bungalows on the beach.
  • Day 12-14
    Waters of Togean islands are home to 96% of all existing coral species. Those interested can take a diving course or go snorkeling. We will also explore the nearby volcanic island, enjoy pristine beaches, go fishing and visit the village of sea nomads - the Bajau people. On our last day we take a boat back to Wakai and board a night ferry to Gorontalo (13 hours on the way), crossing the equator.
  • Day 15
    Arrival in Gorontalo in the morning. We walk around this Muslim city, have lunch and catch a flight to Manado – the capital of Sulawesi Utara province. We check into a hotel, stroll around the city and try exotic Minahasan cuisine.
  • Day 16-17
    In the morning we visit world famous Tomohon market known for its gruesome meat section. Later, we transfer to Tangkoko National Park to watch some of its abundant wildlife, including unique crested black macaques and tarsiers – one of the world’s smallest primates. We can swim and relax on a lovely volcanic beach with black sand. Next day, we go diving or snorkeling near Bunaken Island known for its underwater world with a good chance of seeing sharks and turtles.
  • Day 18
    Transfer to Manado airport. You bid farewell to the tour leader and fly back home.

Is this trip for you? 

The trip is dynamic, of average difficulty. Expect long city walks, short 1-2-hour volcano climbs and an overnight ferry from Wakai to Gorontalo. We will also take several long daytime rides in hired minivans or off-road vehicles with lots of sightseeing on the way, as well as several speed boat rides. We will stay in simple hotels and bungalows on the beach, some will have Wi-Fi internet and hot water.

Price of the trip includes: 

  • Four domestic flights: Yogyakarta – Surabaya, Denpasar – Makassar, Makassar – Luwuk, Gorontalo – Manado; 
  • All accommodation including twin and triple rooms in simple hotels and bungalows on the beach; 
  • All transportation including buses, boats, ferries, hired and public transport;
  • Food on Kadidiri island + breakfasts in some hotels; 
  • Professional guiding services. 

To be paid separately: 

  • Flight to Yogyakarta and back home from Manado; 
  • Medical insurance (mandatory); 
  • Entrance fees to temples, parks and other attractions ($120-200) and additional excursions on islands ($45);
  • Diving (from $28 per dive or PADI Open Water diving course including 5 dives, test and certification – $390); 
  • Snorkeling ($7-10 per day for snorkeling gear rent); 
  • Food ($8-18 per day).
