Two neighboring countries with very similar past, yet very different present. We start in Malaysia, with it`s jungles, diverse heritage and ultra-modern cities. Then, we go beyond tourist havens of Indonesia, exploring Martian landscapes of Bromo and Ijen volcanoes, Sulawesi island, beautiful waterfalls and magical Bali. We will also marvel at unique underwater world of Togean islands, and attend world famous ancient ceremonies of remote Tana Toraja.

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, checking into a hotel.
  • Day 2
    We visit holy Hindu Batu caves, then head to the world’s largest covered bird park and explore Petronas twin towers with a lush park. For dinner we head to the famous Alor Street known for seafood and other mouthwatering Asian dishes.
  • Day 3
    Bus to Malacca, the oldest town in Malaysia. We visit the History and Ethnography Museum, ride a boat down the Malacca river, explore the old town and remains of the fort. After lunch we go back to Kuala Lumpur and then take a bus to Penang island (around 8 hours).
  • Day 4
    We spend our morning in the jungle hiking to the sandy beach of Teluk Bahang National Park, then visit a butterfly park and several remarkable Buddhist temples. Penang is one of the world’s food destinations, and we will take full advantage of it`s Malay, Indian, Chinese and Baba-Nyonya cuisines.
  • Day 5
    In the morning we visit Kek Lok Si Temple with it`s striking pagoda and the statue of Guan Yin. Then walk in Penang Botanic Gardens and spend the rest of the day enyoing endless mazy streets of old Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Day 6
    Morning flight to Kuala Lumpur followed by another flight to the ancient city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Checking into a hotel.
  • Day 7
    We visit two major attractions of Central Jawa – Prambanan, a complex of early medieval Hindu temples, and Borobudur, a 9th-century Buddhist stupa and temple complex, both located close to Yogyakarta. Afterwards we explore authentic Muslim quarters of Yogyakarta and have dinner in the famous local restaurant.
  • Day 8
    We visit Kraton Palace, residence of Yogyakarta sultans, and explore Yogyakarta’s landmarks. Dinner on one of the beaches outside the city.
  • Day 9
    Bus transfer (6 hours) to the eastern city of Probolinggo at the foot of the Bromo volcano. Checking into a hotel close to the crater.
  • Day 10
    Early in the morning we set out for Bromo crater and watch breathtaking sunrise in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. We explore active volcano and out of this world landscapes, then go back to the hotel and ride to Bondowoso (about 2 hours). After checking into a hotel close to Ijen volcano we take a short walk to a gorgeous waterfall.
  • Day 11
    We climb Ijen volcano, and explore crater of the “poisonous lake”, where hundreds of Indonesian workers mine sulfur every night. After lunch we take a bus and a ferry to Bali (5-6 hours) and check into a hotel in Ubud.
  • Day 12-14
    We spend three days exploring Bali by minivans, enjoying island’s magical nature and famous landmarks. We start by visiting 10th century Tirta Empul and 16th century Tanah Lot temples. Then we hike to a waterfall in the northwest of the island and walk in the jungle. We visit coffee plantations, rice terraces, local manufactures. We will also raft along a gorgeous river in the heart of the island, travel to authentic Bali villages, stopping at lesser-known beaches and watch traditional dances.
  • Day 15
    Flight to Makassar, the largest city on Sulawesi. We explore the city, visit old port, and experience realities of non-touristy Indonesian city. Night bus to Rantepao (9 hours).
  • Day 16-17
    Arrival in Rantepao, the major town of the mountainous Tana Toraja area. After checking into a hotel in the center we begin exploring the region by hired vehicles. We will attend world-famous traditional burial ceremonies, visit authentic villages with unusual architecture, and watch ancient burial caves and graves in rocks and trees.
  • Day 18
    We spend this day travelling to the port town of Ampana, enjoying views on the way.
  • Day 19
    We arrive in Ampana and take a boat to Wakai, the main village of Togean islands (4-5 hours). From Wakai we take a speed boat to the nearby island where we check into bungalows on the beach.
  • Day 20-22
    Waters of Togean islands are home to 96% of all existing coral species. Those interested can take a diving course or go snorkeling. We will also explore the nearby Una-Una volcanic island, watch dolphins, enjoy pristine beaches, go fishing or hunting for coconut crabs. On our last day we take a boat back to Wakai and board a night ferry to Gorontalo (13 hours on the way), crossing the equator.
  • Day 23
    Arrival in Gorontalo in the morning. We walk in this Muslim city, have lunch and catch a flight to Manado – the capital of Sulawesi Utara province. We check into a hotel, stroll around the city and try exotic Minahasan cuisine.
  • Day 24-25
    In the morning we visit world-famous Tomohon market known for it`s gruesome meat section. Later, we transfer to Tangkoko National Park to watch some of it`s abundant wildlife, including unique crested black macaques and tarsiers – one of the world’s smallest primates. We can swim and relax on a lovely volcanic beach with black sand. Next day, we go diving or snorkeling near Bunaken Island known for it`s underwater world with a good chance of seeing sharks and turtles.
  • Day 26
    Transfer to Manado airport. You bid farewell to the tour leader and fly to Kuala Lumpur.
  • Day 27
    Change planes in Kuala Lumpur and a flight back home.

Is this trip for you? 

The trip is of light physical grade. Expect long city walks and two night bus rides in the mountains. The trip also includes several long daytime rides in hired minivans or off-road vehicles with sightseeing on the way, as well as ferry and speed boat rides and five short domestic flights. We will stay in tourist class hotels and bungalows on the beach, most will have Wi-Fi internet and hot water.

Price of the trip includes: 

  • All domestic flights: Penang – Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur – Yogyakarta, Denpasar – Makassar, Gorontalo – Manado, Manado-Kuala Lumpur; 
  • All accommodation, including twin and triple rooms of simple hotels and bungalows on the beach; 
  • All transportation including buses, boats, ferries, hired and public transport; 
  • Food on Kadidiri island + breakfasts in some hotels; 
  • Professional guiding services. 

To be paid separately:

  • Flight to Kuala Lumpur and back home; 
  • Medical insurance (mandatory); 
  • Entrance fees to temples, parks and other attractions (up to $160-200) and additional excursions on the islands ($45);
  • Diving (from $28 per dive or PADI Open Water diving course including 5 dives, test and certification – $390); 
  • Snorkeling ($7-10 per day for snorkeling gear rent); 
  • Food ($8-20 per person per day).
