Colonial architecture, pristine beaches, and amazing diversity of nature. South India is very different from the rest of the country! We will travel to the most interesting parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states, visiting former French colonies, famous ashrams and temples and spend time relishing Indian ocean. A trip to India would not be complete without riding all local means of transportation and getting acquainted with delicious cuisine! Bonus - trying out ayurveda - the ancient Indian healing system.
  • Day 1
    Arrival in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state. We ride jeeps to Tiruvannamalai (4 hours on the way) where we check into a hotel in the center.
  • Day 2
    We visit ashram of the famous Indian sage Ramana Maharshi. Then we walk to the holy Arunachala hill (1 hour) and enjoy beautiful view of the city. One of the main holy Hindu sites in South India, the hill is revered as one of the avatars of god Shiva. Here we will visit caves, used by ancient yogis.
  • Day 3
    We spend 3 hours driving to Chidambaram, where we check into a hotel in the center. In the evening we visit the famous temple complex of Dancing Shiva.
  • Day 4
    In the morning we spent 1.5 hours in jeeps getting to Pondicherry - the former French colony. We check into a hotel and enjoy colonial architecture and the atmosphere of France.
  • Day 5
    We take a short trip to the nearby Auroville - the town of the future. Famous as a an experimental township where people of all nationalities and religions live together, the town boasts a large meditation center Matrimandir. We return to Pondicherry in the evening.
  • Day 6
    We visit Sri Aurobindo ashram, founded by Mirra Alfassa. The rest of the day can be spent shopping or enjoying ayurvedic treatment.
  • Day 7
    In the morning we take a train to the southernmost point of India - the town of Kanyakumari. The trip of 700 km will take 15-16 hours, rewarded by beautiful views.
  • Day 8
    We arrive in Kanyakumari and watch picturesque sunrise over the Indian ocean. Then we check into a hotel near the ocean we visit the temple of Kanyakumari goddess known as a patron of marriages. We then visit local Catholic church, the famous pearl market and take a ferry to Vivekananda rock.
  • Day 9
    After enjoying a lovely sunrise we take a train to Varkala (2.5 hours on the way) where we check into a hotel not far from the beach. In the evening we enjoy the ocean and a stunning sunset.
  • Day 10
    We take a trip to the elephant farm, then visit the ancient Janardanaswamy Temple - one of the few Hindu temples in Kerala where foreigners are allowed.
  • Day 11
    In the morning we ride boats in the world-famous backwaters of Kerala, then visit Shiva temple on the Golden island.
  • Day 12
    We take a colorful local train to the capital of Kerala state - Trivandrum. (1 hour). We explore the city, visit the famous supermarket of gold (3 storeys!) and a zoo. We are back in Varkala in the evening.
  • Day 13-14
    Free days which can be spent enjoying the ocean, taking walks, visiting ayurvedic clinic and relishing seafood.
  • Day 15
    We drive to Trivandrum airport (1.5 hours) and fly back home.

Is this trip for you? 

This trip is of easy physical grade. It consists of visiting large cities and small towns. We will also walk for 1-hour up the hill. The trip also includes several short (up to 6 hours) rides by jeeps, and one long night train ride (with sleeping benches and air conditioning). We will also move around by rickshaws, boats and ferries. The trip is of standard service grade. Accommodation in double rooms of hotels and guesthouses, most will have hot water and wi fi internet.
