A unique trip to the wild, absolutely not touristy parts of Nepal where we will be the only foreigners. After visiting ancient Kathmandu valley, we walk for 8 days to the sacred Salpa lake 3800 meters above sea level. Here we will participate in the annual Baisakh Purnima festival, celebrated on the banks of the lake by Nepali shamans dzakri who come from all over the country. On the way to Salpa we will walk through the least known part of eastern Nepal, visiting villages of Rai, Bahun, Chhetri, Tamang, Magar tribes, many of which still lead primitive lives. We will also enjoy beautiful mountain views, rivers, picturesque canyons, waterfalls, and walk through a mysterious forest.
  • Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu, checking into a hotel in a historic Boudhanath district.
  • Day 2
In the morning we take a walk to the 5th century Swayambhu complex - symbol of Nepali capital. We will also visit old market of fabrics, Mahabuddha Stupa and Kathmandu Durbar square - the oldest architecture structure in Kathmandu valley.
  • Day 3
In the morning we explore famous Thamel district, then visit Palace of the living goddess Kumari and antique market.
  • Day 4
We will visit the famous Tibetan fortune teller and master of ancient practice Chöd Lama Wangdu. In the evening we take a night bus to Dharan city.
  • Day 5
Morning arrival in Dharan, the center of eastern Nepal. After breakfast and shower we take a 3 hours bus to Legva village, then take a short ferry across Arun river, have lunch and ride jeeps for 4-5 hours to the town of Bhojpur where all roads end. Night in a family run hotel.
  • Day 6
In the morning we meet our porters who will accompany us carrying our bags. We start our trek with a 4-5 hours walk to Sunthale village. On the way we will enjoy picturesque valleys, views of rice paddies and banana groves. We spend the night in tents near the river.
  • Day 7
From Sunthale we start our 6 hours walk to the the village of Bhajan, crossing canyons on bamboo suspension bridges. Bhajan is known in Nepal as a village of pupils - local mayor worked as a waiter in Switzerland to build 4 schools for children from neighbouring villages. We spend the night in tents near the river.
  • Day 8
In the morning we start our 7 hours walk to Kundalung. On the way we will rest near the mountainous river and visit a small family run handmade production of rice paper. Night in tents near the bamboo grove.
  • Day 9
In the morning we walk to Dobani for 6 hours. If the weather is clear on the way we will be enjoying stunning views of mountains Makalu and Kala-Patthar. We spend the night in a small hotel run by a family of Chhetri tribe with a view over Arun and Khola rivers.

This day will be spent walking for 8 hours to Salpa lake. In the village of Bilbat on our way we will visit a magical appliances bazaar where we will learn about some of the most famous Nepali traditional medicine - tails of albino yaks, juniper bark, alcohol infusion in calabash, and, if we are lucky, necklaces from monkey’s teeth or snake’s vertebrae. Another interesting place on our way to the lake is a Ghostly forest which resembles mysterious forests from the Lord of the rings. Locals believe that nobody should stop while walking through this forest. There are also no villages around the forest. We spend the night in tents near the lake.

I am very grateful to life for this experience of doing this amazing trek, where I saw very different places, another way of life, and met such interesting people. To be honest, I am still thinking about that trip almost every day! Nepal and Salpa left very bright and unforgettable impressions. Himalayas are a wonderful experience and a challenge!

I love visiting places unknown to tourists and usually travel alone, but this trip changed my opinion about group trips. I was the only Italian in the group, and the oldest person, so I was really worried that I will not find common ground with the rest of the group. But Ukrainian and Russian members of the group were so helpful and easy going that we had a great time together, I learned a lot of new words and found many new friends! Of course Salpa is a really special sacred place, but the way to it is really magical. I will never forget the feeling of walking in the ghostly forest, watching shamans, and mountains of stunning beauty….I feel like not only I conquered the mountains but, thanks to I Love Asia, also touched its soul. And you know what? I think I will do this trek one more time!

Impressions of this trek to the shaman lake are impossible to forget. It was interesting, fun, mysterious and sunny. We visited places that look like they came from the Jules Verne books, where foreigners are like aliens from space. I loved everything – unique places, trek with tents and swims in rivers and lakes, very knowledgeable and attentive guide, locals, Nepali children, shamans, rituals, local way of life, meditations near campfire, local cuisine and, of course, Nepali masala tea.
