One of the most mysterious and developed countries on Earth is ready to reveal its secrets. During our trip we will visit three ancient capitals and megapolises of Japan, see the famous Golden temple Kukkaku-ji, stone garden in Rean-ji, majestic temples, parks and monuments of Hiroshima. We will also ride Japan’s trademark bullet trains, ropeways, ferries and speed boats, and those brave ones are welcome to try out some of the world’s most daring roller coasters at the foot of mount Fuji. Get ready to find the best kobe beef in the city of Kobe, octopus takoyaki in the dishes’ home of Osaka and enjoy sushi and delicious sea food.

  • Day 1
    Arrival in Osaka, checking into a hotel in the center. We will explore Minami - one of the centers of nightlife and will start getting to know local cuisine.
  • Day 2
    We will visit the grand castle of Osaka, and will observe the city from the top of Umeda Sky building, or from the ferris wheel, and then explore all eight floors of the largest aquarium in Japan.
  • Day 3
    We take a one hour train ride to one of Japan’s ancient capitals - Kyoto. On the way we stop in the town of Inari where we visit the famous 8th century Fushimi Inari temple with thousands traditional Japanese gates torii. Arrival in Kyoto, checking into a hotel.
  • Day 4-5
    We visit the famous temple of Kinkaku-ji of 14 century which inspired Yukio Mishima to write his award winning novel “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion”. We will also visit Ryōan-ji , a Zen Buddhist temple known for its stone garden in particular. We will enjoy the philosophers trail, peeking inside ancient temples and marvelling at maple trees on the way. Finally, we visit Gion district where main events of the famous “Geisha memoirs” novel took place.
  • Day 6
    We take a train to the town of Nara (45 minutes) - one of the first capitals of Japan. Here we visit the Tōdai-ji temple which houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana. Also, we pay a visit to Kōfuku-ji temple with its 50 meters tall pagoda, and will enjoy local parks where deers are roaming freely. In the afternoon we move to the port city of Kobe (1.5 hours on the way)
  • Day 7
    Kobe is a large port city. In 1995 it was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake but has since been rebuilt. It is now a wonderful example of the city created in just two decades. We will view Kobe from the ferry, from the roof of one of the skyscraper and from the inside, while searching for the famous delicious beef dish kobe.
  • Day 8
    We take a famous high speed Shinkansen train to Himeji travelling for one hour. In Himeji we will visit 14th century Himeji castle, then continue our train journey to Hiroshima for another hour where we check into a hotel.
  • Day 9
    We take a trip to Itsukushima island by a train and a ferry (1 hour) where we will enjoy one of Japan’s iconic views - torii gates on water. We will ride a ropeway up the hill to observe the island from above and will enjoy pristine nature of the island.
  • Day 10
    We explore Hiroshima, starting with the epicenter of the nuclear disaster that took place here more than 70 years ago. We will visit one of the few buildings that survived the bombing and has since been turned to a Peace Memorial known as the Atomic Bomb Dome. Also, we explore 16th century Hiroshima castle known as carps castle, and take a speed train to Tokyo (5 hours on the way) where we check into a hotel.
  • Day 11
    We take a train (45 minutes) to the Pacific ocean where we visit the town of Kamakura which for more than a hundred years was the most important political and spiritual center of Japan. We explore local ancient Buddhist and Shinto temples, visit the 13th century bronze statue of Great Buddha and enjoy the ocean.
  • Day 12
    We take a bus (2 hours) to the symbol of Japan - mount Fuji. Those interested can spend this day in Fuji-Q Highland amusement park at the foot of the mountain. The park is known for one of the world’s tallest and largest roller coasters and other attractions. Another option is to take a one hour bus to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station and enjoy views from 2300 meters. In the evening we take a bus back to Tokyo (2 hours).
  • Day 13
    Early in the morning we visit the tallest tower in the world - Tokyo Skytree. We will watch the city from 350 or 450 meters (different observation decks) and then walk to the oldest Shinto temple in the capital. We will also explore Akihabara district famous for being a shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods.
  • Day 14
    Flight back home.

Is this trip for you?

This trip is dynamic, of medium difficulty level. It involves visiting megapolises and smaller cities. We will be walking a lot, taking short train and bus rides and one long train ride of up to 6 hours. We will also move around by ferries and speed boats. Accommodation will be provided in simple guesthouses and hotels, all will have hot water and wi fi internet.
